If it wasn’t for one first sergeant’s decision to bring his men to a “stand to” position, a devastating case of friendly fire might have occurred in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, when an army plane accidentally dropped a 500-pound bomb right on an infantry post.
U.S. mortar teams spotted Taliban forces in the mountains, but when they called in an airstrike, the pilot somehow missed the target, taking out a chunk of their camp. Thankfully, the men were spared.
